Will a 2012 Pole Shift Bring Chaos?
The 2012 pole shift that is being talked about deals with the geographic poles of the earth and how their position affects the axis of rotation in the solar system and the underlying surface of the planet.
The hypothesis suggests that such a rapid shift or a
pole reversal
would cause tragic floods due to the shifting of plates under the earth's crust.
There are also more dramatic speculations going around about a shift causing destructive earthquakes and tsunamis as well as
2012 doomsday
occurences.
This theory often gets confused with theories concerning
geomagnetic reversal
which deals more with
magnetosphere
of the planet.
Scientific Research on the Topic
Research has discovered that the poles actually do shift, but in history rapid shifts are not evident. True polar wander suggests that the poles have shifted gradually at one degree or less every million years.
The possibility of reorientation of the planet's axis of rotation has not been discounted altogether. There are several forces that have been identified as having the potential of cause a rapid shift. These include impacts of
asteroids or comets
and changes in topography regarding the core and mantle of the earth.
NASA scientists
claim that it is impossible for the rotation of the earth to reverse. They do validate magnetic reversal theories but say that magnetic reversal is not harmful and it is not expected to occur in 2012.
