I believe that anxieties about winter solstice 2012 are based on correlation of the date with other
2012 predictions
and
2012 prophecies
.
Winter solstice is actually a term that defines the time that the earth is the farthest away from the sun. This event happens on December 21st or December 22nd in the northern hemisphere. It also happens on June 20th or June 21st in the southern hemisphere.
Cultural Significance
Many cultures recognize winter solstice and celebrate it in different ways. These rituals and celebrations are many times due to the belief of the solstice being a time of rebirth. Some ancient cultures believed that the solstice controlled the mating of animals and the astronomical event was used to gauge harvesting times.
There is nothing strange about winter solstice 2012. It happens every year like clock work. The myths associated with it I believe are due to the date of
December 21 2012
. The Mayans were awesome astrologers and their long count calendar, the
2012 Mayan calendar
, ends on
December 21st 2012
which causes much speculation including deeming it
Doomsday
.
Others think that a
2012 apocalypse
is coming while others are stating that 2012 represents the
end of days
or an event that will cause the
end of the world in 2012
.
Astrological Significance
There is fear about the sun aligning with the Milky Way; however, this also happens every year without ill effects. So, should we be concerned about the winter solstice of 2012?
If you were to ask a NASA scientist, "What will happen on December 21st of 2012?" I can pretty much guaranty that they will tell you the only expectation for that date is the winter solstice. No bells or whistles from them.
Personally, I don't like that time of the year because it represents mid-winter and I don't like cold weather. Other than perhaps a chilling winter storm, I don't anticipate anything bad to naturally happen on that date. What you do think?
